The Words of A Teacher

WE ALL NEED TO HEAR THESE WORDS-KNOW THEY ARE TRUE

There are times in life when the right person with the right words will show up at just the right time and have a dramatic impact on your life. For me it happened at age 16. The who was a gentleman by the name of Mr. Gretzinger. He was my guidance councillor.

I grew up in poverty and parent alcoholism and violence that led to living on the streets at age 14. Once I reached 16, it seemed the only thing to do was to leave school and get work so I could eat. One day in December shortly after my 16th birthday I made the decision, went to the office to quit school and as a function of signing the papers you had to meet with the guidance councillor who would try and talk you out of it. And he did.

For more than an hour that kind gentleman did his very best to talk me out of leaving but he wasn’t able to. You see the voices in my head telling me this was the only option were just too strong. As I was walking out of his office he stopped me and said “Randy, I want you to know this” I turned and replied “What’s that sir”?

He said;

“I want you to know that where you are now has nothing to do with where you can go”

In the moment I had no way of knowing the impact those words would have on my life. There was no question I sure was in a place where I needed to hear them. There were no angles singing and I did not hear harp music in the background but over time his words kept coming back and after a while I began to wonder,

“What if he’s right? What if where I am now has nothing to do with were I could go”? It was that question and continuing to push back against the lies of the world that changed my life and brought me to where I am today.

Today, that is why I do what I do. To help as many people as I can make those works their own. Regardless of where you are right now in life those words have power. Know this. For today and tomorrow and all the rest of your days know that “Where you are now has nothing to do with where you can go”.

If you or I or anyone does this, everything changes. If you stop stopping that is. For most, the goals we set fall by the wayside and pile up on the list of ‘undone’ in our lives. The question I have been asking audiences for the past 16 years holds the truth.

“If you set a goal, find out what’s necessary to achieve it, begin to invest in the activity and you don’t stop, is pretty much any goal possible”?

The answer, short of physical limitations is,

What happens is that once we set a goal, begin to take action and move towards it we begin to weigh our progress and activity against the information stored in the subconscious mind implanted from past experiences. The access of this information is ultimately what causes most to stop.

When we analyze it we discover it was little more than a thought that prevented us from continuing on and achieving our goal. A thought by the way based on a past experience that is no longer here. We can overcome a thought.

If we are 100% honest with ourselves and reflect back on our own goals from the past that we did not achieve we can see in most instances the reason we failed was because we stopped. We quit. I know hearing that voice in your head saying ‘you are a quitter’ may be harsh but it also may just be the wake up call we need to hear. Please don’t equate this to being a bad or flawed person.

You are human. The voice in your head can be very cunning and it convinced you to stop. To quit. Repeat after me, “I am not a quitter”. That is the key first step in developing the resolve that will allow you to achieve anything.

The fact of the question remains the cornerstone of achievement. “If we set a goal, find out what is necessary to achieve it, begin to invest in the activity and we don’t stop, we can achieve anything”.

Oh, and that voice that tries to tell you it’s too hard or you are not tall enough or educated enough or rich enough or good looking enough is

simply just full of it!

You can do anything your mind can imagine. Carry those words with you. “Where you are now has NOTHING to do with where you can go”.

Have an excellent day and be well,
