Learn to Forget

Learn to ForgetWhat's behind me is not important.  That was a great line from a comedy I saw many years ago. The line was delivered by this gregarious man driving a convertible sports car at break neck speeds around hairpin turns down a mountain road while being chased by the bad guys. Without warning he reached up, tore off the rear-view mirror and tossed it over the cliff. At that his female passenger screamed, "What did you do that for?" to which he replied, "What's behind me is not important". What a great metaphor for those goals in life that remain off on the horizon. Until the time machine has been perfected there is no way of going back and changing anything. Last year, last month and last minute. When the moment has passed it is gone. Cats may have nine lives, questionable gifts live on through re-gifting but when a moment has passed it is over. Strange then when we consider this just how hard and fast we cling to moments past. Not the moments of life to be cherished but the moments lamented for being wasted. Often the passage of time itself becomes the excuse not to invest in today.   I had a discussion with a client feeling unfulfilled in his career. He was working in construction, (he was quite good at it others told but he did not like it) Prior to that he worked as an orderly in the hospital for 15 years. His dream many years ago and as we came to find out, still was to be a paramedic. What I was able to find out was that he dismissed his dream quite some time ago because 47 years of life had passed and he thought it was too late for him. Too many years had passed? Turns out the course, for which I am certain he can pass is only two years. Here is the truth of what I told him. In two years he will be 49. He can either be a 49-year-old grumpy construction worker or a 49-year-old junior paramedic living his dream. The only thing worthy of focusing on is what is before him. What remains for this man is well over 30 years. Plenty of life left to drink it in and grow and live with passion. When thinking about what is possible in your life its important to understand the truth. Here it is. What's behind you is not important. Have an excellent day.   Be well,   Randy Taylor   Buy The Books!
