If you don't see the opportunity, give it a day

It turns out that the story was not as it was spun, but word had it that back in the early 1900's the director of the patent office was considering tendering his resignation because everything that could be invented already had. I'm sure to many throughout history it would appear that the opportunity for bringing something new to the marketplace was fading to black. I was reminded just how quickly things can change over the weekend. While doing a mid winter spring cleaning we were debating what to do with the array of DVD's and VHS tapes that fill the cabinets of our entertainment centre. We have the new Apple TV box and now have completely erased the need to go to the video store. Remember those? Also, this 4" square marvel allows us to connect to Netflix for $8 a month. It provides an archive of thousands of TV shows, documentaries, movies and more at the touch of a button. Having spent 20 years in the media and having watched the vinyl album get turfed for the 8 track then the cassette, CD and mp3 player, the discussion was always "what technology will replace this?" The answer turned out to be nothing. We no longer buy a storage unit. The geniuses of technology have figured out a way to remove the storage issue for us all. All they had to do was to wait for the right time and right place. What a great lesson to us all. When pondering our ideas of today don't be so quick to toss them out the door if you don't see an immediate fit. Changes happen at the speed of life. Don't be so fast to write off the client. Don't be so fast to dismiss the new marketing plan or the new job offer or the new girl or boy in your life. Here's what this all means I guess. If you don't see the opportunity, give it a day. Have an excellent day. Randy Taylor
