Feed The Brain New Experiences
Published on December 10, 2014
We can get stuck in a routine. We all can. That is the basis for the creation of behaviors after all. I spend the majority of my professional time working with clients to overcome negative behaviors and creating new ones. The reality is however that there are certain aspects of life that we don't get to engage in at all due to our, well, routine. It reminds me of the old T.V. commercials where the boy says, "Give it to Mikey. He'll try it. He eats everything". That's what I'm talking about. Every once in a while it's good to be Mikey. I had lunch with a client last week and we were talking about home renovations. He told me the story of the patio he built at his home recently. The quote he got from a contractor was really expensive. After pricing out the materials only and finding a good friend who had some experience he decided to tackle it on his own. It took himself and a group of friends an entire, back breaking day to complete the job which actually turned out quite well. Along with saving a significant amount of money, this white color by day professional gained tremendous personal satisfaction from doing something outside of his comfort zone and working up a sweat. Along with a sore back what he got was an experience that will last for years. Now every time he steps onto his new patio he will re-live the experience and the pride that ensures. This was outside of his comfort zone and something he was glad he tasted. Here's what this all means I guess. While plodding along through our daily routine it's a good idea to reach out once in a while and try something brand new far from our most comfortable chair. Do that then. Break away from the norm sometimes and feed the brain with new experiences. It does amazing things when it grows. Have an excellent day. Be well, Randy Taylor
